Our History |

St. Philip's United Methodist Church was organized in November of 1983 by the Commission on Church Growth and Development of the Central Texas Annual Conference. The first worship service was held in November, 1983, and met in the Brushy Creek Elementary School. On April 29th, 1984, St. Philip's officially became an organized congregation of The United Methodist Church. In the fall of 1985, the growing congregation moved into the office building located next to our present campus. In the spring of 1987, the congregation moved to its current location.
St Philip's celebrated its 20th anniversary on April 25, 2004

OUR HISTORIC SANCTUARY |

|
St. Philip's heritage is
deeply enriched by its historic sanctuary. Built in 1908, it served the
Turnersville United Methodist Church until June 1986. It was moved from
Turnersville, a small town west and south of Waco, Texas in 1987 to its
present location in Brushy Creek. After an extensive renovation, the
sanctuary began to be used by St. Philip's United Methodist Church.

| A HISTORIC RING | |||||||||||||||||||||
![]() |
A broken rope could not
stop one Turnersville resident from ringing in the news that World War I was
nearly over. On Armistice Day, he climbed up into the bell tower of the then
Turnersville Methodist Church and struck the bell repeatedly with a hammer.
The bell, which cracked under the hammer's assault, now rings a sour note.
But to St. Philip's United Methodist Church's members and friends, history
and traditions are written in such imperfections.

The newest addition to St. Philips' building structure broke ground March 1, 1998, and was completed January 4, 1999. It was consecrated for use in a service February 28, 1999, as services were already being relocated to allow for bigger congregations. With this new structure, St. Philip's has already held plays and dinners, and plans are in the works to help community outreach through performances, garage sales, etc. |

| TOUCHED BY HISTORY FOR TODAY | |||||||||||||||||||||
|
If you visit St. Philip's and sit in its historic chapel or Family Life Center and feel its history, remember that much love, many prayers, and a lot of hard work went into the building of St. Philip's United Methodist Church. Yet, the church is not a building or a location, but the church is the body of Jesus Christ living and working for today. |
